Collecting RainwaterRainwater is really natures own watering system and is very good for the plants. It is also free for the collecting. Not only can you water your plants, but your hair and skin will thank you for washing them in rainwater. If there is a few weeks drought, you will have a supply of water, thanks to several rainbarrels. Worried about mosquitos making your barrel a home? Toss in 4 - 5 goldfish. They love the water and will eat the mosquito larvae. You only need to feed the fish 1 to 2 times a week if that and you don't have to clean the fish tank! |
CompostingComposting is a very good way to enhance the growth of your plants as well as make your vegetables, fruits and herbs taste extra delicious and nutritious. In order for the soil to have plenty of nutrients for the plants, there needs to be organic material present. What things can go into your compost barrel? You can put your shredded paper and newspaper, paper towels, kitchen scraps, leaves, grass clippings and garden refuse. Avoid grass roots, weeds that have gone to seed, any diseased or unhealthy plants, and invasive plants. Layer these materials in order to avoid bad odor. A good compost does not have a bad smell.
